guardian.co.uk FAQs

Each week, guardian.co.uk receives several thousand emails from users around the world. Our user help manager, Mabel Msonthi, has taken time out to help give some answers to your most common inquiries (in no particular order)

guardian.co.uk

1. Does everything that appears in the newspaper automatically go onto the website?

The majority of articles from the Guardian and Observer do appear on guardian.co.uk. However, there are a small number of occasions where we are unable to republish certain content due to copyright restrictions.

2. How do I obtain a back issue of the Guardian or Observer newspaper?

Back copies of the Guardian and Observer are available from a company called "Historic Newspapers" whose archive for both newspapers dates back to the very first editions.

For all queries, please contact Historic Newspapers

Telephone: 0844 770 7684

Email:
info@back-issue-newspapers.co.uk

Website:
guardian.backissuenewspapers.co.uk observer.backissuenewspapers.co.uk

Digital copies of both the Guardian and Observer are now available online via our Digital Archive. The archive contains the digital reproduction of every page, article and advert published in the Guardian (since 1821) and the Observer (since 1791 - the oldest Sunday paper in the world). Currently, the archive covers the period of 1821-2000 for the Guardian and 1791-2000 for the Observer

3. How can I suggest useful links to accompany articles?

Please go to our How to contact page, which has contact details for all guardian.co.uk websites.

4. How do I send a letter to the Guardian?

You can email your letter to letters@guardian.co.uk, fax to 020-3353 3193, or post it to: The Guardian, Kings Place, 90 York Way, London, N1 9GU.

We do not publish letters where only an email address is supplied; please include a full postal address, day time telephone number and a reference to the relevant article. If you do not want your email address published, please say so. We may edit letters.

How do I send a letter to the Observer?

Faxes and emails, which may be edited, are more likely to arrive in time for publication than letters sent by post. They should be short, include a full name and postal address. You can email letters@observer.co.uk (please insert 'Letter to the editor' in the subject field), fax 020-7837 7817, or post to the following address: Letters to the Editor, The Observer, Kings Place, 90 York Way, London, N1 9GU (to be received by noon Thursday).

Is there a letters page specifically for the website?

No, the letters page is the one for the newspaper.

5. How do I get work experience at the Guardian?

Most of the Guardian's editorial work-experience placements are dedicated to those on the various bursary and award schemes, particularly in holiday periods. For details on these schemes and how to apply for them please visit our careers website and click on the Internships and Traineeships link. Outside these schemes, work-experience openings are limited. To be considered in the event that any vacancy arises, applicants can contact individual departments. A detailed CV and examples of written or audio-visual work will be needed, showing over all a strong evidence of a commitment to journalism. This can take various forms, including student journalism and work on a personal website or blog.

The Guardian also runs a programme of one-day seminars, entitled Insight into Journalism, for those exploring whether, and how, to pursue this field. Again, details are in the Internships and Traineeships section.

Work experience is also offered to winners of The Guardian's Student Media Awards.
